I agree with havesomeseichel that you seem to know your stuff. I have a different problem that maybe you know a solution for. Every once in a while I lose internet connectivity completely. The only way I know of to get back online is to reboot. That works every time. Any ideas? That is how much actual RAM you have. To check your virtual memory, look at the bottom of the system box to where it says Page File, that is how much virtual memory you have used out of your total virtual memory.
Dell is very good at step-by-step instructions. Re: your advice to charlie brown, I agree that a router is an absolute must, even with the windows firewall or third-party firewall activated.
A known issue with prior versions of ZoneAlarm was that after periods of inactivity, sometimes the computer would need to be restarted in order to connect. Even with a router and DHCP enabled, usually a new IP is not assigned, unless another device grabbed the old address in the meantime.
PINGing the router is a way of checking where the disconnect is. There should be a customer service number you can call to give you some good assistance in this matter. Seriously, my job requires that I have computers at home, and my admittedly limited knowledge comes from maintaining those, as well as helping relatives with their computers.
I love MACs, I was lucky enough to get one at a bargain price cheaper then an entry model dell. I do have the rectangle cable modem that optimum gave me and no router — I thought you only need a router to share the modem between several computers, never knew it was unsafe.
Why is that? Also, the modem is connected directly to the computer via USB cable not ethernet cable. Would the latter be better? At that time I had zone alarm pro on both computers and everything worked fine. When I got the vista box I was unable to get the networking between the laptop and the desktop to work properly so I gave up and manage with just one computer.
The ethernet switch is not connected anymore to anything. I also no longer have zone alarm pro Wanted to save money, my free updates ran out and I would have needed an update for it to work on vista. Windows firewall is on.
I also have avast free antivirus — do you or anyone else here know whether that is reliable? It happened again this morning and I did ipconfig before and after the reboot and the ip address was unchanged. I assume you are referring to the IPv4 address, not the subnet mask or default gateway?
Had I known this in advance I would have bought a computer with XP. I am completely clueless. Mariner has done an excellent job of explaining the hardware-based protection a router gives to devices hooked up to it. An additional benefit you will get is the ability to have multiple computers on-line at once without bothering to potchke with a shared connection.
The speed is slower, but for most people who access the web, use email and occasionally download stuff like me DSL is fine. Does the router also allow me to share files between computers, or do I still need my network switch for that? I have avoided wireless for 2 reasons which are both based on my not trusting myself to secure it properly. The first is that my kids have a computer without internet access — just for games and word processing etc.
If they attached a wire to my computer or the new router to sneak onto the internet, I would see it. The other reason is just basic security. After hearing stories like the one a few years ago where identity thieves sat in Best Buy parking lots and picked up credit card numbers from the wireless cash registers, I just got scared off from even trying. But then again maybe I should get over my network phobia, buy the dummies book and learn how it all works.
You can also share a printer that is physically connected to only one computer, or even buy a network printer that connects wired or wirelessly to the router, thereby forgoing the necessity of turning on the computer the printer is connected to before printing from another computer. NOTE: You will have to re-install any software and updates you installed between now and the restore point, but you can use Windows Update for the updates.
The recovery disk works a bit different from the above procedures but if you follow the prompts from the System Restore menu option with the above information you should be able to restore with no problems.
To do that, wait for the screen that tells you the F key to push to access the boot menu or boot setup. Push it quickly. Make the changes, save your work, and exit. Put the CD in the drive and reboot. When prompted, push any key to boot from the CD. If that doesn't work, try to boot into safe mode repeatedly click the F8 key while booting and go to safe mode with networking — or do so from the command prompt on the disk. It will scan and try to fix some of your system files.
Try to post any corrupted files here so we can see if they can be repaired with good copies from the installation disk unless there are too many. It will want to schedule itself to run at the next restart. Answer yes and then reboot to run the program. It will scan and try to fix any corruption or bad sectors on your hard drive and mostly remove that as a potential cause.
Look in the System section. You may be infected with malware. Try to run anti-malware programs in safe mode with networking if necessary. Before downloading pandasoft, uninstall whatever anti-virus program you are currently using because installing and running two at the same time can cause conflicts, freezes, and all sorts of problems.
Once you've uninstalled your current AV program, download, install, update, and scan using Pandasoft. I think you might be amazed at how much it finds that the other software missed. Once complete, uninstall pandasoft and re-install your current AV program unless you decide to switch which I did when I first tried it about 4 years ago. Reboot after completing all the scans. If the problem goes away then it's just a matter of tracking down the culprit causing the problem.
The Program may respond again if you wait. Do you want to end this process? I'm done. I'm out. I had a similar issue with renaming folders: it says that a file in that folder is used by another program, which is NOT the case. But I found out the bug: I saved an image form a mail in outlook in that folder. This is definitely a bug that needs fixing. Same issue if you opened a PDF from that folder: even if you close the file, you have to close Acrobat all together to rename your folder.
Not efficient at all, especially if at work you have several PDF's open that you want to keep open. That is interesting, indeed. I, too, had that issue crop up frequently and would just get frustrated and reboot, thinking it was just another "undocumented feature" of an operating system that is not ready for prime time.
I had rolled back to Win 10 for a while. After I noted that several updates had been released from the Microsoft Wizards, I thought I'd try it again. The same issues are still there. Windows Explorer frequently crawls to a stop and task manager doesn't respond, often eliciting a hard reboot. Windows Explorer closes and resets while renaming files. Windows Explorer no longer has "Move to folder" and "Copy to folder," however, there is a registry hack, but it has to be reapplied after any Windows update.
DX12 is so unstable, it is like trying to game on Windows Vista remember that abomination? There are several other major inconveniences that I am not willing to live with, as well. So, I rolled back to Windows 10 and turned off the reminder to upgrade to Windows I haven't dropped out of the Windows Insider program yet because I read user comments and experiences to monitor for real fixes.
